راحت هستر مع بنتها توصل قفازات هى عملتها لقاعة الحاكم وعشان تطلب من الحاكم انها تحتفظ ببنتها والحاكم كان شايف ان بيرل لازم تتربي في بيت نصرانى 
وهستر عملت لبنتها ملابس قرمزية بخيوط ذهبية والكاتب وصف بيرل بأنها جسدت الحرف القرمزى.لما جا الحاكم بيرل عطته وردة حمراء كانت معاها.
